Silo rules: keep topic clusters linking the right way
This guide explains cluster linking in plain language, so your topic groups support each other instead of becoming disconnected or messy.
Cluster basics in one minute
A cluster is a set of pages around one main topic. Usually one page is the main guide, and supporting pages dive deeper into subtopics.
Good silo linking means supporting pages link back to the main page and also connect to nearby subtopics when useful.
Silo & Link Quality
Control cluster→pillar linking rules and review gaps
Top KPIs mirror the Silo & Link Quality tools tab.
Simple silo rules
- Each supporting page should link to its main topic page at least once.
- Do not force every page to link to every other page.
- Keep links inside the same topic group when possible.
- Use clear anchor text that matches the destination idea.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Too many links to unrelated topics on the same page.
- No return path from supporting pages to the main page.
- Using the exact same anchor text everywhere.
- Adding links just to increase counts, not to help readers.

Simple fix routine
Choose one cluster
Do not try to fix the whole site in one pass.
Repair return links first
Add clear links from support pages back to the main page.
Trim random cross-links
Keep only links that truly help the reader continue the same topic.
Recheck next week
Repeat on one more cluster until the full site is clean.
