How I compared each WordPress SEO plugin
A WordPress SEO plugin does not rank your site by itself. It handles the technical basics so your content has a fair chance. So I judged each one on the jobs a plugin must do well:
- The essentials: titles and meta descriptions, XML sitemaps, canonicals, robots settings and schema markup.
- Housekeeping: redirects, 404 monitoring and IndexNow, which save hours when you move or delete pages.
- Guidance: whether the editor checks actually help someone write a better page.
- AI era features: llms.txt, AI crawler controls and AI writing tools, and whether they are honest about what they do.
- Real cost: the price per site at renewal, not the first year discount.
- Weight: how many settings screens and admin notices you have to live with.

1. Rank Math: best free SEO plugin
Rank Math packs more into its free version than any other plugin here: redirects, a 404 monitor, Instant Indexing for IndexNow, llms.txt, many schema types and Search Console data inside WordPress. It is built from modules you can switch off, which keeps it manageable. Pro adds keyword rank tracking and AI Link Genius, and covers unlimited personal sites on one plan.

Yoast is the plugin most people start with, and its content and readability analysis is still the easiest to follow. The free version handles sitemaps, schema and llms.txt well. Redirects, IndexNow, internal linking suggestions and multiple keyphrases are Premium, which is priced per site.

3. All in One SEO: best guided setup
AIOSEO focuses on a friendly setup wizard and a checklist style audit, with strong WooCommerce support in every paid plan. The regular prices are $99 a year for 1 site, $199 for 3 and $399 for 10, with a lower introductory price in year one. The link assistant and advanced redirects start at the Pro plan.

4. SEOPress: best value without the noise

5. The SEO Framework: best lightweight plugin
The SEO Framework does the critical work automatically and stays out of your way. It is fast, has almost no upsell noise, and the free version is genuinely complete for most blogs. Paid plans unlock extensions: $84 a year for 2 sites, $204 for 20 and $324 for 200.

6. Slim SEO: best set and forget option
Slim SEO has almost no settings. It generates titles, descriptions, schema and sitemaps automatically. It suits small sites whose owners never want to think about SEO settings, but you give up most control.
7. SEO Rank Genius: best for internal linking and site structure
This is my plugin. It covers the same essentials as the others, and focuses on the part they leave to add ons: internal linking you can preview and undo, pillar and cluster coverage, a link graph, orphan detection and a cannibalization detector. It also scores each post for AI readiness and manages llms.txt and IndexNow.

Rank Math Pro covers unlimited personal sites for €107.88 a year at renewal, so it is the cheapest paid option for owners of several sites. SEOPress PRO starts at $49 for one site. If you only run one site, the free versions of Rank Math, Yoast or The SEO Framework are enough to start.
